Project Overview
Dripstone Childcare Centre
The Dripstone Children’s Centre, set in a coastal suburban area near Charles Darwin University and the Royal
Darwin Hospital, showcases thoughtful design and functionality. The project involved demolishing the old
daycare and creating a high-end replacement with four activity rooms, a meals preparation area, ablutions, an
office, and a spacious verandah with disability access.
The planning phase included detailed design, geotechnical and topographical investigations, and various
engineering disciplines, along with securing development consent, stormwater drainage design, and obtaining
an occupancy permit compliant with daycare/schooling requirements.
Despite challenges like limited workspace and a busy adjacent road, the work was completed quickly to minimize
disruption. The semi-elevated building features tough exterior cladding and a verandah for shade and cooling,
with ramped entry for accessibility. Inside, the light-filled rooms have custom cabinetry, ample storage, and open
floor space for easy movement. Picture windows frame tropical gardens, enhancing the timber-look flooring with
natural light. Rooms are connected by glass-panelled doors for visibility and functionality. Child-friendly
bathrooms include built-in change tables, sinks, stainless steel toilet options, a disabled toilet, and a laundry
room.
Staff benefit from internal offices with internet connections and air conditioning, creating a comfortable, modern
environment for both children and educators.
