Project Overview
Homebuild Project
We played a key role in the development and delivery of modular homes across multiple communities, aligning with
the goals of the Northern Territory Government’s Our Future program. This initiative focuses on building capacity
and improving living conditions for remote and regional communities.
Our efforts included manufacturing, transporting, and installing modular homes tailored to the unique needs and
conditions of each community.
Jilkminggan Community:
We constructed 15 tropical-style houses at our Darwin facility, including all aspects such as steel framing, cladding,
electrical systems, plumbing, and more. After completing the modules, we transported them approximately 500
kilometers. On-site preparations included demolishing old structures, civil works for piers and footings, and utility
disconnections. Local Indigenous workers and suppliers contributed to the project, which was managed from
Mataranka Manor.
Nturiya Community:
The project involved three arid houses, manufactured and transported 1,300 kilometers from Darwin. Site
preparations mirrored those of Jilkminggan, with the added complexity of extended transport time. Installation
included electrical, plumbing, and mechanical works.
Yuendumu Community:
We delivered two arid houses, constructed in Darwin and transported over 1,500 kilometers. Site work involved
demolishing existing structures and civil works similar to previous projects. Notably, one house faced delays due to
sacred site considerations but was completed within budget.
Amoonguna Community:
This project entailed four arid houses, also manufactured in Darwin and transported 1,500 kilometers. Site
preparation and installation processes were consistent with other projects. An asbestos complaint, unrelated to our
work, was resolved collaboratively with DIPL and WorkSafe.
Atitjere Community:
We manufactured and installed four houses, transporting them across 1,565 kilometers. The project included
standard site preparations and installation. We were re-contracted to install an additional house.
Alpurrulam Community:
This project involved three 2-bedroom homes, four 4-bedroom homes, and two 3-bedroom homes. The modular
homes were transported 1,500 kilometers. Site preparations included demolishing structures where necessary. We
worked closely with stakeholders to adapt designs and address cooling system challenges.
Throughout these projects, Northern Transportables demonstrated commitment to meeting community needs and
overcoming logistical and technical challenges, ensuring timely and within-budget completion for each community.
The scope of work included:
- Design of suitable housing solutions fit for remote living, prefabricated in Darwin
- Manufacture of 3 & 4 bedroom homes with a steel frame configuration
- Storage of the buildings ready for mobilization
- Obtaining relevant authority approvals for installation
- Engaging with the local community and providing training
- Collaborating with local community businesses to facilitate the scope where possible
- Installation of buildings, including structural and cosmetic connections
- Site clearing and civil pad preparation
- Landscaping and installation of fencing
- Connection of services and occupancy certification
